Ionization Flame Monitors

A flame is essentially a poorly conductive plasma. The burner control relay applies AC voltage to the ionization electrode; when a flame forms, the ions within it generate a very small DC current between the electrode and the grounded burner body. The relay measures this current to confirm the presence of a flame.
